Robbie Williams: Close Encounters
Sunday, December 17 and Monday, December 18
Telstra Dome
Improper Bostonian 06-07-2006, 12:45 PM HE wants to entertain you, and Robbie Williams' instant sell-out show has got promoters entertaining the idea of a second Melbourne performance.
Yesterday, tickets to the UK performer's Telstra Dome show sold out in 25 minutes.
But the 60,000 seats won't hold all of Melbourne's Robbie fans, and promoter Michael Chugg knows it.
"We're discussing it with Robbie himself, and we should know if he's keen for a second show within the next couple of days," Mr Chugg said.
"Last time Robbie was here he sold out Telstra Dome, but we didn't need a second show.
"Obviously his reputation as an unbelievable live performer is growing."
The December 17 Melbourne show is the last on Williams' Close Encounters tour, with the performer planning a break after it is over.

MELBOURNE will get a second Robbie Williams show -- the final performance of his world tour.
The show will at Telstra Dome on December 18.
Tickets will go on sale on Friday next week through Ticketmaster. Tickets for his first show, on December 17, sold out in 25 minutes.
Promoter Michael Chugg said Williams didn't take much persuading to add the show to his itinerary.
"We started talking about a week ago because we could see it was probably on the cards," Chugg said. "He loves Australia so much."
More than 300,000 tickets for his Australian shows have been sold.
Mr Chugg said there would be less tickets available for pre-sale for the December 18 show.

Ironically, as the unstoppable sisters powered through the anthem, Williams was over the road playing soccer. Soccer has been a tour ritual for Williams. And, true to form, he and kitted-up mates played a vigorous match at Olympic Park. Vantage points from the road were blacked out and Williams's security team prowled the perimeter for prying eyes.
As Dannii performed with her sister, the Kylie-Williams riddle remained. When will pop's princess and rock's bad boy get together? Williams's Docklands show tomorrow is a last chance.

There's no better build-up for a big night on the stage than a good workout with the round ball.
Just ask heart-throb Robbie Williams, who with some mates took over Olympic Park last night for a five-a-side game.
His team had Williams' name emblazoned on their backs.
Williams performs at Telstra Dome tonight.

CHLOE Adams writes: British pop star Robbie Williams wowed a record 64,000 fans at Telstra Dome last night in one of the last, but most eagerly anticipated, concert tours of the year.
The ever-entertaining Williams gave fans a hi-tech production filled with pyrotechnics and a string of hits. Unfortunately, there were no added bonuses on offer at the first of Williams' two Melbourne gigs. However tonight's could offer some special treats, as it is the last of his world tour.
The seasoned entertainer arrived on stage amid plumes of smoke and fireballs, opening the show with Radio.
Williams was soon up to his old stage tricks, prancing about and preening, his arsenal of slightly deranged facial expressions displayed on giant screens.
However looking tired and drained from months of touring, Williams appeared all too aware he was nearing an indefinite hiatus from performing.
Williams's powerful voice shone in the falsetto-ridden Trippin' and the Take That song Back for Good.
Let Me Entertain You rocked the Dome, and the show ended on a spine-tingling note with Angels and Kids.
lennon 12-17-2006, 03:09 PM Robbie's Kylie no-show a puzzler
December 18, 2006 12:00am
SATURDAY'S Kylie Minogue concert came and went, but there was no sign of her star pal, heart-throb Robbie Williams.
The Brit had been touted to sing duet Kids with Kylie on stage, but instead the pop princess's sister, Dannii, filled the spot.
And tickets that Williams had for the show were not used.
So, what busy scheduling kept Williams from appearing at Rod Laver Arena?
Apparently not much.
Williams was seen having a quiet drink at the Langham Hotel bar on Saturday evening after tussling with mates and the Melbourne Victory boys on the soccer field.
Maybe he was resting the vocal cords for his Telstra Dome gig last night.
The Kylie and Dannii duet had been a long time coming.
They last performed together onstage in Melbourne at the 1987 I Say No concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
They did a very Young Talent Time-esque rendition of the Pointer Sisters' Twist My Arm.

shell 12-18-2006, 06:24 AM MUSIC REVIEW Robbie Williams at the
Telstra Dome, December 17 2006
He has an enviable assemblage of pop hits and has sold tens of millions of albums and concert tickets. More than 450,000 Australians have been prepared to fork out hundreds of dollars each to see him play.
So why is life so cumbersome for Robbie Williams? Last night, the tortured pop star came back to Melbourne for what he has declared to be his last shows for the forseeable future. What he dispensed was an uneven night of stadium-pop that veered from gloriously entertaining to somewhat patchy.
Dwarfed by a gargantuan stage set that held about 6000 LCD lights, and accompanied by more than 63,500 rapturous fans, Williams kicked off the Melbourne leg with the garish glam-pop single Radio and the more agreeable Rock DJ.
As one of the best entertainers in an increasingly bland pop world, Williams' previous Australian tours have been unarguable triumphs. An extraordinarily candid lyricist, Williams effectively plays the part of afflicted superstar.
But last night the show was at times both lethargic and ballad-heavy.
Still, it appeared to matter little to what was a positively exultant crowd.

BIG HAY LOSS
MADELINE HEALEY and MATT NEAL
December 19, 2006
FIREFIGHTERS were last night preparing to spend the night fighting a hayshed blaze at Mepunga West which has destroyed hundreds of tonnes of hay believed to be worth about $150,000.
Fire broke out in the four-bay shed, on Graeme and Sally Croft's Killeens Road dairy property, about 5pm yesterday. Firefighters from nine south-west brigades were last night preparing to continue monitoring the blaze.
Warrnambool CFA fire officer Owen Maslen said the hay had already lost all its value and there was no option but to let it burn all night while making sure it remained contained to the shed.
It was the fourth haystack fire in only a few days after three fires broke out at Drumborg, Bochara and Tarrenlea over the weekend. All fires were believed to have been started by spontaneous combustion.
Mr Croft said the shed, which was only one year old, would have been worth about $100,000. He said it contained as many as 500 tonnes of several different types of hay. Mr Croft said the fire could have resulted from spontaneous combustion.
``Hay this year was baled earlier than normal in a leafy immature stage, which makes it harder to dry and gives it a whole different feel about it,'' he said. Mr Croft said the shed and hay were insured and he saw it as more of an inconvenience than a major problem.
``It can be all replaced. No machinery was lost _ no lives lost. It's insured. It's just an inconvenience at this time of year so we'll push on,'' he said.
Mr Croft went to Melbourne by bus yesterday to attend the Robbie Williams concert and could not return home last night to help fight the blaze.
``I got the call when I was in Melbourne and I was on a bus, a coach,'' Mr Croft said. ``I couldn't go anywhere. ``I just had to rely on the fire brigade which I'm a part of. ``I know they're excellent. I've got confidence in everybody and good staff.''
A contractor working for Mr Croft reported the fire when he and another worker noticed it from one of the paddocks. CFA region four operations manager Peter Novotny said hayshed fires were one of the authority's primary concerns.
The spate of haystack fires over the weekend and yesterday follows recent similar blazes at Mepunga, Allansford, Ballangeich, Balmoral, Tyrendarra, Merino, Woolsthorpe, Camperdown, Murroa and Terang.
Mr Novotny said farmers needed to check their hay.
``The last thing we want to see is for spontaneous combustion to (start) a fire and for it to get away on a bad day,'' he said. ``They can run on pretty quickly and can reach huge sizes.''
He said farmers who carted in hay recently should inspect their stacks and separate bales if necessary.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS SHOWS OFF HIS FOOTIE SKILLS DOWN UNDERSEND TO A FRIEND

Robbie Williams raised the roof at Melbourne's Telstra Dome venue when he played a spectacular concert for 64,000 adoring fans. The British pop star, who is currently in Australia for a series of concerts, received a rapturous reception when he stepped out onto the stage amid a whirl of smoke and pyrotechnics.
The 32-year-old was probably equally as pleased to be visiting the country as its residents were to have him there, because the trip gave him the opportunity to indulge his favourite pastime. After wowing locals with his musical abilities, the Angels singer took advantage of the warmer climes by playing a football match in the city's Olympic Park stadium.
The former Take That star, who is well-known for his life-long love of the game, takes to the field for a kickabout whenever he gets the chance. Earlier this year he even organised a charity match with many of the sport's biggest stars, in order to raise money for Unicef. The performer, who counts David Beckham and Wayne Rooney among his friends, owns a stake in first division team Port Vale FC, too.

Robbie might have been forgiven for feeling a little tired on Monday, though, as he is nearing the end of a lengthy world tour. He is then looking forward to a break from the stage, which will no doubt give him plenty of time to work on his footie skills.

BRITISH pop star Robbie Williams smashed concert attendance records at his Docklands shows.
Williams performed to 64,720 punters last Sunday and 65,606 on Monday. That eclipses a wrestling event Global Warning, which attracted 56,734 fans to Telstra Dome in August 2002.
Williams promoter, Michael Chugg, said the tour now stands as Australia's biggest tour. "It was three hectic weeks that felt like two months, but we are all very proud," Chugg said. "Robbie played in nine stadiums to 490,000 Australian fans. It all went like clockwork."
Williams played to mixed reviews from self indulgent to consummate showman. In Melbourne, he looked unfit and ready to make good on those vows to retire. But Williams played to his crowd and they loved him for it.
A Robbie-riddle still lingers, though. Why did he and Kylie Minogue not hook up during their Melbourne shows?
Last Saturday as Kylie performed at Rod Laver Arena, Williams played soccer at Olympic Park. Last Monday as Robbie wowed Docklands, Kylie was at her end-of-tour party.
Chugg says the two, who recorded a hit duet Kids, crossed paths in Perth. "They stayed at the same hotel," Chugg said. "As for singing with each other, that was only ever discussed by the media. "I never thought, at any time, they'd turn up at each other's shows. It was never discussed by Robbie or Kylie at any level."

kizza 12-29-2006, 02:32 AM It always surprises me when they say things like this. :23b: I wonder what concert they were at cos the ones I saw were brilliant!!
My NON robbie fan friend who saw the final show with me in Melb said he was fabulous and I think I even heard her say she was going to buy one of his CD's! :2b:and let me tell you this was a HUGE achievement to win her over. She will never be a die hard fan, but she has certainly changed her mind about him. :wink3:
Krystin 12-29-2006, 09:36 AM I also find it very hard to believe. It just shows what utter rubbish the media goes on about these days.
Every single person I've spoken to that went to his two Melbourne shows said they were blown away. I have not heard one whisper of a negative report. I don't know why they try to bring Robbie down so much.
The whole show was fabulous - even Sneaky Sound System as the support act. They rocked! The lead singer is an absolute stunner.
