This morning (just after 9am) on Ray D'arcy Show on Today FM they gave an update on the situation.
Mairead from the show called MCD (promoters) who gave the number for Robbie's Management and for the last two weeks have been calling and leaving messages. They received a reply yesterday and played the voicemail on air.
It said the following:
" Robbie will definately be back to Dublin to play a free gig, but at this time we are not in a position to say when or where. As soon as more details are confirmed we will release the details, so ask your listeners to keep an eye on www.robbiewilliams.com his official website for the most up to date information. "
The radios website is www.todayfm.com although there is nothing posted on there as of yet...

Are there any community parks or council fields that could accomodate a free gig?

I checked my local airport and its £21 return flight to Dublin - so if its a free for all i'm going :)

Not sure Shell, the biggest park that they have in Dublin is Phoenix Park, (wouldn't say he will be playing there again!)
theres also Marley Park. Other large venues besides Croker would be Lansdowne Road - cant think of anywhere else???
Any ideas anyone?

I heard the way they are giving out the tickets is,anyone with a ticket from
june 9th will need to send the ticket stub to the website or ticketmaster and they will be sent out a new ticket for the free gig, which is only fair in my opinion.

Apparently Croke Park are only allowed a few concert dates a year, and theyd used them all, so it cant be there. Will ask Serc and get her to post here. She lives in Dublin.

The details that were released on the radio yesterday were in the Irish Sun today, they said the quote was released by a spokesperson from EMI - his record label. So its getting a bit of publicity over here....

Croke Park only allow 3 concerts a year. Bon Jovi and Robbie have already played this year and I think its Phil Collins who is playing there in couple weeks.

There you go! Must be somewhere else.

Serc
06-27-2006, 02:14 PM
The only thing is if he is pretty booked up maybe he'll do early next year in Croke Park? I can't see Landsdowne or RDS cause they are quite a bit smaller if he wanted to accomodate everyone. Marlay Park is a possibility but they only have licence for summer months due to sport events during the year.
But didn't U2 do one in Merrion Square or Stephens Green or somewhere. It all depends which way they'll do tickets. If you need your ticket ala Milton Keynes it will have to be a "venue", but if its a free for all (which will be in my opinion too crazy) they could just close off streets. If it is going to be that type it won't be till next year. With all the planning involved anyone on here from Ireland will know it would take ages! Sorry I've not been able to help. I will keep an ear out though!

i think that is the only fair way to do it. the only thing is he said he would give a free concert to dublin not just the people who paid to be there that night so it could well be a ' free for all '. i just hope they do give priorty to existing ticket holders.

well i've heard it's gonna be a Park in Dublin, not Croke Park as there are only 3 shows a year, and not Phoenix Park as that's too big. i don't really know my way around dublin so dunno where else, but i was told it's gonna be in a park.

I was just about to say this, I think someone spotted this last year and thought he was doing a second dublin gig when in fact he wasnt' I wouldnt have thought this date was true as he is in Leeds two days later and it takes a while to dismantle transport and erect the stage... especially in a place like Leeds where all facilities have to be built as it is just a park

Just to add something to the rumours: I met one of Rob's truck drivers while waiting to be let into the venue at Hamburg. The guy is from Leeds and drives one of Robbie's stage trucks during the tour. He told me that the free gig in Dublin will take place in August. Unfortunately he didn't know the exact date. Of course I don't know whether he really knows something or just wanted to show off a little. However, he also told me, that they are going to do a DVD of the tour while Robbie is in Leeds and that makes perfectly sense to me...

Teresa
07-22-2006, 07:45 PM
It dont really leave much time to release tickets and stuff if its gonna be on in August in Dublin.

Serc
07-23-2006, 10:20 AM
I don't think that he'll get a venue for Dublin in August. Someone else from Ireland can correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't GAA start back in August which puts Corke Park out. Any of the parks will need more notice and there are so many festivals over here in August. I don't think he'd get a venue. I may be wrong, but I just don't think its enough notice.

Serc
07-23-2006, 10:24 AM
It has to be Marlay if they are doing a ticket replication. If you have to use your original ticket all other venues RDS, Lansdowne are too small.

SOUSOUS

1. Lansdowne Road Stadium

2. Royal Dublin Society Showground

If Croke Park not avalaible, these two others stadium could be used

Lansdowne Road is being closed for reconstruction at some stage, not sure when so depending on when its being closed that could be ruled out too. Id say it will be Marley Park if it is being held this year.

This was taken from a site i found..... http://www.sousous.org/RW2006.htm>>>>> "Sunday morning, while waiting for the check-in at the Milan airport, i was seated near a Bristish Airways Self Check-in desk. I was listening to the Milano boot when i said to myself that the guy who was using this desk was the Neil twin (same hair, same look). Well, few seconds later, the Garry twin was using the self check-in too !!!.

I stand up, having my Ticket concert inside my wallet. I asked Neil if he wanted to sign the ticket . He said "Yes, no problem". Then i had enough luck to talk with the two guys during five minutes.

Me: "Congratulation for yestarday show, very powerful"

Neil: "Thanks, yes, it was great, the italian crowd was "crazy" (he gave the show ticket to Garry for his autograph )

Me: "Are you going back to London ?"

Neil: "Right, short break before the next show"

Moi: " RudeBox, the new title is a little bit strange, what do you think about it ?"

Neil: (with a smile, looking at Garry) "Yes, very strange........"

Moi: "There is a rumour about two concert in France, Lens, at the end of August, True or lie ?"

Neil: "No, no extra shows scheduled. Maybe, only one in Ireland, i think" (asking to Garry ) "Garry?"

Garry: "Yes, the extra show in Ireland should be scheduled"."

:eire: So i won't give up yet!!!!!!

if robbie does do the free concert which is very unlikely at the minute coz if it is free then that wud mean the ppl that were at the first concert shud have first priority to be there and then if its in phoenix park it goes around the corner too so most ppl wont see anything, robbie has messed this up a bit but if he does do he will have to do it at the end of september start fo october before he goes to south america and australia

:pmsl: Yeah that would be funny if he saw the banner!! Hopefully he will come back as it seems like forever since the 9th June! Whether it's a free one or just another date he knows he'll sell it out!! As for the venue - God only knows where it'll be. Croker seems to be busy with the GAA at least until mid-September anyways. Well it depends who you talk to Libelle! I was there & the impression I got was that he meant a free gig for the people who were there that night as he said he felt he didn't do a great show, the audience were way better than him etc.....We were told to hang onto our tickets in case (as if we would throw them away!). I would imagine it would be extremely hard to organise a complete free for all for anyone as the whole country would just grind to a halt & also the atmosphere mightn't be as good if any old people can turn up & not just big Robbie fans. Pop heart-throb Robbie Williams has good news and bad news for his Irish fans today.

The Good News: Robbie tells the Sunday World that he intends to honour his promise to preform a FREE concert in Ireland, after admitting his June show was not his best.
The Bad News: Robbie confesses that, contrary to his pledge at the end of his Croke Park concert in June, he wont be back this year and no date for the future gig has been finalised.
Although he delighted screaming fans with a string his hits including Angels, Let Me Entertain You and Radio, Robbie admits he wasnt happy with his Croker show, during which a stunt went wrong in front of 80,000 fans.
Chatting this week in London where he gave the Sunday World a sneak preview of his new album, Rudebox, due out in on October 20, Robbie says: "I promised the Irish a free gig and i will do that. It wont happen this year, like i promised".
Mimicking his Croker promise he proclaims loudly: "And ill be back this year!" I did say that, didnt i. Im prone to very big, grand gestures. But i though i owe it to Ireland because the fans there have been so supportive"

croke park will not be used again til next april or so for concerts,,,,it is now rugby season and they are saving the pitch for rugby, and a few soccer matches
lansdowne is closed for refurbishments which could take forever,,(look at the new wembley stadium) haha

 Ya.i'd love to find out how it will work, the only ways they can do it is

1.use the ticketstuds:dance:

2.check the cpt data base and sent out ticket to people who have purchased the tickets for croker.

3.do the same as live aid and get people tp text in for the tickets:angry:

i'd say the first and second would be the best & fairest way.

WILLIAMS DROPS FREE DUBLIN GIG

Pop star Robbie Williams is facing criticism after pulling out of a free concert in Dublin, Ireland despite promising to return after his chaotic concert in June (06). The ANGELS hitmaker was left red-faced at the summer show when he attempted to make a spectacular entrance suspended from a gondola-like contraption over the stage - only for the mechanics to become stuck, leaving him dangling before he was rescued by technicians. Williams admitted the show was a fiasco, and subsequently vowed to the 80,000 fans he would play a gig for them for free by the end of 2006 to make up for it. But he has since told promoters in the Irish capital he will not be fulfilling his promise after all. Williams recently ditched the entire Asian leg of his tour, scheduled for later this year (06), because he is reportedly exhausted after overdoing his onstage capers. A spokesman for the star says honouring the dates would simply be "asking too much".

It's only to be expected isn't it? To be completely honest I'm not surprised as I remember thinking when he said it that there was no way he could do it before the end of 2006 as he's touring right up until the end of December.

No doubt the rags will have a field day with this piece of news, and won't acknowledge the fact that it takes guts to stand up and say you didn't do your best. How many other artists would do the same???

I was at Dublin & it was great - not the best show but still fantastic.

However it wasn't really said in the heat of the moment cos he said it & then checked it out with his manager who said yes, he repeated this a few times too.

I do still love him but if we was never gonna do it he should have said so straight away rather than keep people guessing for over 3 months

Having said that as he is cancelling Asia due to exhaustion it is understandable as the guys in Asia should get him first since they haven't seen him & those of us in Dublin have

Hm, this comes from Contact music, so I would be careful about it... Rob said he cannot do the gig this year but said he will come back in 2007.
So I wouldn´t give up hope yet. He promised this gig several times, just a few weeks ago he said it will happen in 2007, so his current exhaustion definitely won´t affect a one off gig in Dublin in 2007.
So no need to be disappointed yet. :)

I don't think he should do one, but wouldn't complain a bit if he did! It definitely wasn't his fault & didn't ruin the show one bit, for me anyway!
First night of the tour and something went wrong & he said afterwards he had a 2 1/2 hour long panic attack. I think he was being genuine saying he wanted to come back and do it again, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

No, it didn't ruin the show and I am sure that noone would have expected him to do a free gig because of that event. It's just that he promised to do so and had David, his manager, to confirm that he can do it. Well, now it kind of feels like: What does Robbie's word stand for? I hope he is only doing the free gig when he really feels like doing it. I would love to go to Dublin again - what a fantastic city - and see Robbie perform again, but I could understand if he didn't do it.

I hope he does come back as it honestly feels like bloody ages since June! I think everyone's just in a heap over this because they think he's going back on his word. He said what he said because he felt he didn't do a good job but unfortunately the organising that has to happen for him to play again is well out of his domain and this obviously is a factor in whether or not he will do another gig in Dublin be it in 2006 or whenever.
I don't think he should be criticised for "pulling out" of this gig or the Asian leg of his tour. It seems to me that he's in a no win situation. If he played the gigs in Asia while not well, people would have been giving out saying his performance wasn't up to scratch & yet when the decision was made to put his health before the concerts, he was criticised again for doing so.
At the end of the day his health comes first. Who knows whether he will come back to play in Ireland again - another Slane gig would be magic and seeing as how amazing his now legendary performance was in 1999, I think in my opinion it would be the perfect venue for a one-off gig.

Right rant over, back to work for me!!

I think it was more than that. He mentions on the official website (Tour archive footage in Amsterdam I think) that he had a 2 hour panic attack and felt he didn't give a good show.
Although this is not official info I can understand why it might not happen. It must cost a fortune taking all the staging, equipment etc. back to Ireland.
I feel very sorry for those who were going though.

Wiley

I don´t think a new gig was necessary at all, as obviously everyone who was there enjoyed the show, despite some problems.
So from this point of view, people didn´t "miss" anything, as they liked the original gig. :)
What I guess would be a disappointing thing is that Rob´s word would mean nothing anymore. He promised this gig in Dublin, David gave him thumbs up, Rob repeated his promise just a few weeks ago - if he won´t keep his word, what is it worth then? :(

I really hope he will do that gig - not because I guess people who went there in June had a bad time and need a second gig. But because I would like to see him keeping his word.

It was a strange situation really, because Robbie wanted to repeat the gig but didn't know if he can promise that. He only did so when David gave his okay. Now it's difficult to draw back. It would have been easy for David to say something like : Let's see. But he didn't do that he just confirmed that there will be a new gig. Don't know what effect it had on the relationship of the two if the gig would not take place after all.

Like so often the fans would understand if there were no free gig - but the press probably wouldn't....

I was at the show & it didn't ruin it for me, but I must admit it wasn't the best Robbie show I have seen.

Robbie always plays fantastic shows in Dublin which is why I travel there for most tours. I've seen him rock Slane, Lansdowne Road, Pheonix Park & Croke Park, and I hate to say it but it wasn't his normal Dublin vibe going on.

After seeing the Sky One documentary you can see that he was having a bad day after changing his medication & he admits to not wanting to go on stage & shitting himself before the show. Afterwards he says that he was shitting himself all the way through which he normally doesn't do once he gets on stage.

The free gig was mentioned after the machinery break down but I think that was the final straw for him as when he said he wanted to comne back & give the crowd a free show he said it was because he felt he hadn't played his best on the night.

Rob doesn't have to give a free show & if it was just a spur of the moment remark from him on the night it wouldn't be a big deal, but as others have said on this thread it was the fact that David said yes rather than say he would look into or see what they could do, this was the point when sanity could have kicked in if it was not possible & why I would be disappointed if it didn't go ahead as this has been promised on more than one occassion over the past 3 months, rather than knocked on the head from the outset as a remark made in the heat of the moment that wasn't feasible to fufil.

I agree Sarah, although having seen him again on the Sat night at Leeds, the 1st night at Dublin was poor in comparison - the performance, the set list and the banter was not as good - but it was the 1st night so technical glitches do happen.
For me, Dublin 06 was a good perfomance, Leeds 06 was a great performance, Dublin 2003 was a fantastic performance.

I agree with you Sam, i was at Dublin, Leeds and MK and Rob was much better at the latter two. Although his voice was a whole lot better in Dublin the banter was just not there. After watching the documentry we all know that he had just changed his meds, and had a panick attack and i fell real sympathy for him, but at the end of the day he should never of promised what he couldn't deliver.

Exactly Bradley, I think everyone needs to take a step back and look at the situation as part of the bigger picture. The man is in the middle of a huge world tour, currently taking a previously unscheduled break....things change all the time and if we've learnt anything these past few weeks, Rob's health is top priority naturally and who knows, when he's back on top of the world where he belongs, there might yet be another gig.
I remember thinking in June when he said about coming back before the end of the year that it was going to be a tight squeeze as he's touring right up until christmas anyway, and on the other hand if he did come back in December you'd get all the moany a***s back up on their soapboxes giving out about the cheek of him doing an outdoor gig in the middle of winter - in the man's own words you "Win Some Lose Some"

I agree to what was said. I saw Robbie in Dublin, Hamburg and Leeds and must say that Dublin was good but not as good as Hamburg or Leeds by far. But I expected the tour to grow on Robbie so I wasn't surprised about the change acutally. I loved him to sing No Regrets and The Trouble with me in Dublin - he dropped these songs for one reason or another later on.

As I said before it's probably not the real fans that are going to mind but the tabloids and the ones who just wanted an extra gig for free.

On the other hand I was taken by surprise when he promised to come again for free right in the beginning. What makes it look a bit strange is that he asked David whether he can promise a free gig and David said, it's okay, you can..... Not keeping his promise after that isn't good PR ....

I don't actually think Rob said he would'nt do it. The quote in the article was refering to the Asian tour but they twisted it to sound like they were refering to Dublin. Rob said that the Dublin free gig would'nt happen this year in an Irish mag a few months ago due to the tour but he said it will definatly happen possible next year and by then he will have had a rest. I don't care when it is just as long as it happens cause I did;nt get the same buzz from Dublin as I did his 5 pervious gig I've seen.

There was an interview with robbie in one of our sunday magazines, here in Ireland today,,,the SUNDAY WORLD.
in the interview which apparently is the only irish given interview,,in the interview,he has said he will definitley be returning to dublin for the 'FREE' concert,as he had a panic attack which lasted 2 hours before concert at croke park, and during, and felt he was a letdown.
he can give no details ,as he has to find a schedule that will probably suit Croke Park stadium, but it will happen next year.
the interview was cool, robbie explaining that he could never stay with one woman,as when he is in bed with a woman,if he sees a beautiful woman on tv he wants to be with that woman too...lol god love im!!!he sounds happy and contented and only cares what his fans think of him,not tabloids
yay,he is coming back to ireland!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also , i still have the paper reviews from the concert and they are just great reviews,,in my mind a free concert was never warranted,as that was a blinding night,,,but i want to have robbie come back,as one night wasnt enough,,,he did at least two nights in most cities and dublin only got one night, which sucked,as i had to leave my daughter at home,as tickets were like gold for the croker gig,,,but i hope he comes back and i hope its the usual way of attending a concert, that we buy the tickets fairly as i am sure, the same people will be there first in line and for the likes of me who lost my stubb,i want to pay for another chance to see great bloke
that s all

Agree with you about being there whether we have to pay or not! Don't see the attraction of Dublin city though as a place to visit, there's nothing exciting for tourists to see here at all!

Let Me Entertain You For Free
Robbie Back For Crocker Concert In December
Irish Sunday Mirror
June 11 2006
By Linda Duff

Knackered Robbie Williams will give up a cash bonanza to perform for his Irish fans FREE.

The former Take That star was so upset with his performance at sell-out Croke Park gig he wants to come back and give his legion of followers a night to remember.

At the end of the 80,000 sell-out gig he said: “I don’t know how Mick Jagger does it. I’m only 32 and I’m knackered.”

“I did not do a good enough job and will come back before December.”

“I haven’t been the best tonight and I’m going to give you a free show.”

He then asked his manager live on stage to give the green light for the bargain show.

The concert later this year is expected to cost multi-millionaire Robbie €3million just to stage.

The impromptu announcement sent the crowd wild

Things just went wrong for Robbie in front of his adoring fans as he kicked off his sell-out world tour.

The pop king, who sells more albums per capital in Ireland than anywhere else in the world, was left red faced when a stunt during his smash hit Let Me Entertain You went embarrassingly wrong.

He hoped to emerge from a high lift gondola but it broke down.

But like a real trouper he knew the show must go on and he ran back down into stage and carried on regardless.

That’s when he made his free gig announcement.

And the fans were simply lapping up crowd-pleasers like Angels, Radio, Sin Sin Sin, Sexed Up and other songs from all his albums, including latest release Intensive Care.

Robbie even ordered the film crew in charge of three video screens to ensure all 80,000 punters could capture the show on screen.

Many had paid more than €800 for a ticket to see their hero live.

And such was the noise, Dubs from miles around Crocker would have been in no doubt who was in town.

And we can expect it all again with the announcement of the free show.

Security at the gig was ultra-tight and Gardai were even orders to ensure that not even a sniff of alcohol got into the ground.

One fan said: “Even if you have a bottle of water they were sniffing it to make sure there was no booze mixed in.”
“It was an alcohol-free zone.”

His personal manager Joanna Stapleton said last night: “We believe robbie’s gig will be in Croke Park once again.”
“Details will be announced later this year.”

But his plans to stage a return in Croke Park may hit a brick wall from officialdom.

The mega-stadium is limited to the number of gigs it can stage every year so he may have to switch to a Phoenix Park return.

After the gig there was an after show-party for Robbie at the Morrison Hotel but he didn’t show.

He had a private jet to take him back to London but Joanna denied the star had snubbed the after show party.

She said: “Robbie does not drink so he didn’t turn up at the party. He just wanted to fly back to see the football.”

p.s. sorry, can't add pictures as don't have scanner at home :sad3:

Star Robbie In Free Dub Concert vow

The Irish People
11 June 2006
Exclusive by Andrea Clarke

Megastar Robbie Williams astonished fans – after vowing to play a FREE Irish concert later this year!

The former Take That star turned in an amazing performance in front of 78,000 ecstatic fans at Croke Park on Friday night.

But fans, who had coughed up almost €100 each for their tickets, thought they were hearing things when Robbie offered them a freebie.

Despite the fans going home happy the Robster was not pleased with his evening’s work after a few technical hitches.

And he vowed: “I’ve not been my best tonight. But I will be back and I will play a free concert for you.”

The football fanatic, who booked out dozens of rooms for his entourage at Jury’s Hotel, said he loved Ireland.

“I love Dublin and Ireland – it’s just the best place to kick off a world tour,” he said.

He played all his classics including Angels, Let Me Entertain You, Rock DJ and Advertising Space.

However not everyone was happy with Robbie’s performance.

Pupils sitting their Leaving and Junior Cert exams at nearby O’Connell’s School had to listen to Williams’ version of old Frank Sinatra classics throughout the day.

School spokeswoman Sandra McLeod said the songs began to fill the classrooms from 10:30am.

“We were right next door… all we were short of was having Robbie Williams singing,” she said.

Once the band had been told of the noise they agreed to stop playing the free concert.

‘I Didn’t Really Entertain You’

Exclusive: The King Of Pop Cries Foul As Grand Finale Stunt Goes Horribly Wrong

Sunday World
June 11, 2006
By Cathal O’Shea and Jack Gleeson

Robbie Williams jetted off to Germany in his private jet yesterday morning to watch England play in Germany hoping his country would perform better in Frankfurt than he did in Croke Park.

The soccer-mad superstar and his pals warmed up for Friday’s gig with a private game of footie against local Dublin club Beechill United.

But later in the evening he cried foul when a grand finale encore stunt fizzled out in front of 90,000 puzzled fans.

Robbie planned to wow the audience by performing crowd favourite Let Me Entertain You while sailing down from stage scaffolding in a giant gondola.

However, fans soon realised something was wrong when the former Take That singer began the song while still hanging on the scaffolding. Robbie started to fluff his lines as he learned that gondola was stuck due to a technical hitch.

HAPPY

The embarrassed singer made his way down to the stage and apologised for the blunder. He told surprised fans he was disappointed with his overall performance and promised he’d be back in Dublin to perform the song at a free gig before the end of the year.

Despite the slip-up most fans were happy with the gig, the first on a 44-date world tour.

“Four an opening night I thought it was a good gig,” said Dubliner Alan Bird.

“I’ve never seen him live before but my girlfriend Sandra is a big fan and she was very happy. He seemed a bit shook when the encore went wrong but I think most fans were surprised when he said he was disappointed with his performance.”

The star, who’s known to be very self-critical, described the gaff as “a classic balls-up” and forced manager David Enthoven to give the free gig promise the thumbs up on the giant screens around the stage.

Robbie also hinted that a reunion with Take That could be on the cards despite his former band mates going it alone on their own tour.

He told the crowd he had been asked to join them but said: “I have a hugely successful world tour of my own to do.”

Robbie, who is expected to play in front of 2.6 million fans during his current tour, entertained a smaller crowd before Friday’s gig with a game of football on playing fields attached to the old people’s home at the Royal Hospital in Donnybrook, Dublin.

MINDERS

A handful of overjoyed spectators watched from the sidelines as Williams led a posse of ten close friends on to the pitch at about 8.30 on Thursday evening for the game against players from local club Beechill United.

The hush, hush event had been specially arranged at the request of the soccer mad singer.

Earlier a small army of about 20 of the singer’s burly minders cordoned the grounds off to prevent any media or uninvited spectators attending the match.

The rock star’s team sported orange luminous bibs for the game against the home opposition who lined out in their traditional red.

Another well-known personality playing with the visiting side was actor Jonathan Wilkes, a former star of the hit television series Eastenders and a close friend of the singer.

Wilkes was later to join his pal on stage for a couple of songs in Croker.

The game was eventually won by his side with Williams contributing two goals to his team’s final tally.

Before arriving in Dublin on Thursday by private jet, the singer confessed that he would rather be attending the World Cup than playing his tour.

“I just want to make people smile and clap and sing along, but I’d still rather be at the football,” he admitted. “If I could chose I’d play football for the masses rather than be a musician, no two ways about it. The World Cup is the ultimate stage, after all.”

Robbie’s Croker performance was one of a series of top gigs that had Dublin rocking over the weekend.

PACKED

More than 265,000 music fans thronged the city for Williams, heavy metal outfits Guns ‘n’ Roses and Metallica, ageing superband The Eagles, top country music legend Emmylou Harris and former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler.

Guns ‘n’ Roses packed out the RDS as Axl Rose took to an Irish stage for the first time since rocking Slane in the early ‘90s while the Ballsbridge venue will have the full house signs up again tonight for Metallica.

Robbie pledges free gig for Irish fans after hitches mar opening show

Ireland on Sunday
June 11, 2006
By Maebh Duffy

Although the reception from the crowd at Friday night’s Robbie Williams gig in Croke Park was electric, the man himself was not pleased with his tour opener.

In fact, Williams was so disappointed with his performance that he promised to compensate his fans by returning to Dublin to play a free concert.

‘I wasn’t very good tonight,’ he told the 80,000 – strong audience, ‘You guys were better than me.’

Technical difficulties marred the second half of the chart-topping singer’s show.

During his penultimate number, Let Me Entertain You, Williams was supposed to descend on gondola from a rig above the stage but the system failed and he was forced to rush back down to the stage on foot.

After the song, Williams explained what had happened to the huge crowd and apologised.

His pledge to host a free gig was greeted with massive applause from the already ecstatic crowd, packed in for the sell-out gig.

‘I’ll be back before the end of the year,’ promised Williams.

After rumours of fake tickets and concerns that cheated fans might cause trouble, there was a large garda presence at the venue but the event passed without major incident.

Gardai were stationed in the areas surrounding the stadium and at Quinn’s Bar. They were on alert for the circulation of fake tickets and, on a sunny evening, the presence of alcohol.
Although most fans were simply enjoying a cold drink before going to see their idol perform, gardai were quick to confiscate bottles and cans from the crowd.

No chances were being taken that those in possession of fake tickets would gain entry to the concert.

Security was extremely tight with checks made on Clonliffe Road and again – with an electronic scanner – at all the turnstiles.

However the heavy official presence did not dampen spirits.

As the ubiquitous street-sellers lined the roads surrounding Croke Park, the queues from fast food establishments spilled out on to them – a last-minute opportunity to eat before facing the prices in the stadium.

Then as the opening notes of the first song soared into the Dublin sky, all eyes and ears were on the main: Robbie Williams.

And when a visibly emotional Williams ended the evening with his song Angels, the crowd was already anticipating his next concert.

Free or not, they will be there. For while he may have felt the glitches spoiled the first night of his 12-date tour, 80,000 people at Croker reckoned it was a winner.

Showman entertains the masses

THE STAR
June 10, 2006
By Aine Bonner

It was tipped to be on of the hottest gigs of the summer – and Robbie fans certainly sizzled yesterday as they queued to see the ultimate showman.

More than 80,000 people endured the blistering heat yesterday as they packed into Croke Park to see the Angels star.

One of those eager punters was Education Minister, Mary Hanafin – who joined thousands of other fans to be entertained by the former Take That singer.

And the wait was definitely worth it, because when Robbie came on stage at a quarter to nine, he blew the fans away with his electric performance.

The singer was as cheeky and magnetic as ever and he wowed fans when he belted out hits from older albums as well as from his latest offering, Intensive Care.

The crowd sang along to his new single Sin Sin Sin and shook the stadium when he blasted out old favourite Let Me Entertain You.

Robbie last played in Ireland at a sold-out show in the Phoenix Park in 2003 and before that, he totally rocked at Slane Castle in 1999.

S****Y

Last night it was rumoured Robbie – despite his new clean cut lifestyle – was planning to meet buddies Bono and Andrea Corr in celebrity haunt Lillies Bordello.

A source at the s****y nightclub said: “We’ve heard through the grapevine that Robbie is planning to come here after the concert and we’ll definitely be holding a table for him.”

The concert – which sold out in 20 minutes – was his first stop and over the summer he will perform 44 times in 14 different countries.

Stuck-up Robbie promises to re-entertain fans

Irish Independent
June 10, 2006
Alison Bray and Grainne Cunningham

It was a performance that left even superstar Robbie Williams high and dry.

Just as his Croke Park sell-out performance reached a crescendo last night and the fans were going wild, he became trapped 100 feet in the air on an illuminated gangplank.

In the midst of singing his blockbuster hit ‘Let Me Entertain You’ a gondola attached to the framework designed to drop him on to the stage refused to budge, leaving him attempting to entertain 100 feet in the air.

Unhappy with performance, he vowed he would return to the capital and perform the song as it was intended… for free.

No date, however, has been set for his encore, encore performance.

While most of the Croke Park fans were on their feet for the duration of the concert, earlier in the day some students sitting their Irish Leaving and Junior Cert exams nearby got an earful.

But this time those supervising the pupils at O’Connell’s School, North Richmond Street weren’t too happy.

The school sits right in the shadow of the stadium and shortly after pens were lifted for the important exams, music filled the rooms.

Supervisor Elissa Reilly said it was “particularly loud. At first, I thought it was someone with their stereo playing in a car outide.”

But when the music continued, the supervisors feared it could disrupt students’ concentration. The gardai were called and someone from school went up to Croke Park to let the band know they were interrupting the students.

School administrator Sandra McLeod said Williams’s version of some of Frank Sinatra oldies were in full swing when she arrived at the school at 10.30 and the music did not stop until more than hour later.

“We are right next door… all we where short of was having Robbie Williams singing,” she said.

However, once the band has been told about the Irish exams being taken next door, they stopped the sound checks.

A school official, who did not want to be named, said he did not want to make a big deal out of the problem.

“They responded,” he said, adding that the school preferred to remain on good terms with Croke Park.

And while the poor students were trying to remember their seanfhocail, no doubt football-mad Robbie was glued to the World Cup build-up hundreds of miles away in Germany. He had insisted his Croker dressing room be supplied with live TV coverage.

Robbie: Let Me Entertain You

Croke Park gets sexed up by Williams’ spectacular show

The Sun
June 10, 2006
By Michael Doyle

80,000 Fans Go Mad

Pop king Robbie Williams delighted over 80,000 fans last night with a mind-blowing live show at Croke Park in Dublin.

The cheeky heart-throb belted out classic hits like Angels, Let Me Entertain You, Sexed Up and a string of tracks from his latest Intensive Care album.

Screaming girls made their adoration of the former Take That star known as soon as he took the stage after 8pm.

GLORIOUS

What followed was two hours of pop perfection a the millionaire singer launched into his lengthy repertoire of chart-topping tunes.

Three years ago, Robbie played the biggest concert of his career – and the biggest ever seen in Ireland – when he wowed 135,000 people in Phoenix Park.

And in terms of the occasion, last night matched it.

The glorious June sunshine gave the perfect backdrop for one of the summer’s biggest concerts – and Robbie’s first on a European tour. Die-hard Robbie fan Jessica Connolly, from Galway, said: “It was his best gig so far. He played all his best hits and you can tell Ireland is his favourite place to play in whole world.

The fact that he picked Dublin as the first venue of his European tour is because he knows it will give him the confidence for the rest of his gigs.

The atmosphere was electric. The weather really added to it and made for a wonderful experience.

While most of the people there were women, he’s definitely starting to appeal to more men.”

Mark Doyle, from Bianchardstown in Dublin, backed up those sentiments.

He said: “He just gets better and better with age. I was a fan in his Take That days put he has really come into his own in the last 10 years. Robbie rules!”

Hours before Robbie was due on stage, the crowds flocked to the Drumcondra venue awaiting the opening of the gates at 5pm.

Many ran straight to the bars, while others dived for the pitch to make sure they had the best possible view of the action. And the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Robbie’s entrance to the delight of the crowds, young and old, who packed into Croke Park last night.

But not everybody was over the moon with Robbie’s appearance at GAA HQ.

Local man Mick Culllen hit out at the noise throughout the day, considering many residents didn’t even get a ticket.

He said: “I live seven doors from Croke Park and the racket all afternoon from rehearsals has been too much to bear. The organisers of these events don’t give a damn about the residents as long as the cash rolls in.”

NOISE

“They have their stadium and their hotel now so why should they care about the residents? We didn’t even get offered a ticket to the concert.”

“The crowds coming out always make loads of noise and leave such a mess that it’s disgraceful.”

“One woman at the end of the road has stand outside her house when people are leaving at every concert because of the mess that’s left and people urinating against her house.”

“The organisers have to start listening to us because it has gone beyond a joke.”

Here’s Robbie Williams boarding his private plane to Dublin – where he kicked off his world tour last night (sorry, can’t scan the pic, but you all have seen it, I’m sure – I.R.).

The singer was wearing a personalised tracksuit with number 74 (the year he was born) on the front – and his name on the left-hand sleeve.

Robbie was due to perform in front of 78,000 fans in the Irish capital’s Croke Park.

His Close Encounters tour has a UFO theme – one of Robbie’s obsessions is with aliens – and it features tracks from his last album Intensive Care. But the football-crazy singer has done his best to ensure his tour dates fit around England’s Worlds Cup schedule.

He was last night set to duet with best pal Jonathan Wilkes on Rob’s song Me And My Shadow.

Robbie was due to kick off his tour opener with track Radio – rather than Lat Me Entertain You, as on previous tours. Let Me Entertain You was moved to open a medley of songs – including Kids and Angels – for his encore.

Williams woos them from the Hill

Let me entertain you: Robbie Williams rocks Croke Park

The Irish Times
June 10, 2006
By Luke O Neill

Sunburnt but satisfied, a sell-out crowd helped to kickstart Robbie Williams European tour at Croke Park last night.

Temperatures had cooled by the time he came on stage – much to the relief of those nursing peeling skin. Williams opened with Radio swiftly followed by Trippin and Rock DJ. So many turned out for Robbie Williams and for Guns ‘n’ Roses in the RDS, that AA Roadwatch reported lengthly traffic tailbacks on the M1 motorway yesterday as far back as the Malahide Estuary, as concert-goers converged with rush-hour Friday traffic. The Smithfield area and North King Street were also badly affected for almost three hours.

While people of all ages and nationalities were at the gig, the ratio of women to men was slightly lopsided.

Linda Jones (39) and Debbie Anderson (43) came from Abergavenny and Newport in south Wales, having booked their trip in February.

Lisa McGill (28) from Ballybofey took the day off from primary school teaching and made the four-hour drive to Dublin yesterday. Ms McGill, who is 18 weeks pregnant, was seeing Robbie for first time. She was there with her husband.

“I heard he is a good performer and a great entertainer,” she said. When asked what made him special, she said it was his “cheeky grin”. “You know when you see that, the Robster’s in the house.”

Williams entertains 80,000 fans to start world tour

Daily Mirror
June 10, 2006
By Paul Martin

Robbie Williams became the King of Croker last night as he launched his world tour in breathtaking style.

Fireworks shot into the Dublin sky as the star thrilled 80,000 fans in scorching heat with a procession of his biggest hits and anthems.

There was a desperate last-minute rush for tickets on the black market as fans tried to book their place at the biggest gig of the year.

Many were forced to splash out up to €800 outside the stadium for pair of seats as touts cashed in on Robbie’s return.

But those lucky enough to be there had no regrets about paying the big prices.

Robbie delivered a vintage performance a he belted out classics such as Angels, Millennium and Let Me Entertain You.

Fans travelled from every corner of the globe to watch the first-night show which costs €200,000 a night to stage. Susan McGrath made the trek from Sydney, Australia, to see her hero.

She said: “This is the most exciting night of my life. I didn’t want to be at the other side of the world when Robbie kicked off his tour. I had to be in Ireland to support him and I ended up having to buy my ticket on the black market for €400. But it’s worth it.”

Dubliner Jenny Holmes was lucky enough to get tickets for her three children. She said: “Robbie is like a God in our house so we were desperate to go and see him live. We got our tickets when they went on sale but most of our friends were left heartbroken because they sold out so quickly.”

The first of a night of great tunes was the No1 hit Radio which brought the thousands to their feet. Letting his fans do the work, the pop icon swaggered down a flight of stairs towards the audience encouraging them to sing along.

As he walked to the edge of the stage two England flags draped from the barriers greeted him along with a message “Robbie’s Angels”.

The first night of this 40-leg tour gave fans across Europe a taste of what is to come.

The crowd screamed as the star sang, danced, and teased his way through the night.

The entire crowd were on their feet for the duration of the show as they were entertained by the ultimate showman.

An unusual duet with his lifelong friend Jonathan Wilkes, Me And My Shadow, kept his fans on their toes before the old favourite from his boy band days, Back For Good, was followed by hit single No Regrets.

Robbie’s set finished with an encore of three of his greatest hits Let Me Entertain You, Kids and Angels.

Robbie wows Croker angels

Superstar jets into Dublin by private plane to kick off his world tour in front of 80,000 adoring fans… including Education Minister Mary Hanafin

Daily Mail
June 10, 2006
By Enda Feeney

It is a sure sign that it’s here at long last.

Although the sun was shining brightly all week, it took the arrival of the annual outdoor concert season for confirmation that the summer has finally arrived.

Four of the biggest names in showbiz – Robbie Williams, The Eagles, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Metallica – are the curtain-raisers on a summer that will also see acts like Billy Joel, The Who and Fatboy Slim take to the stage across Ireland.

Yesterday, Robbie Williams – who arrived in Dublin in a Boeing private jet – was driven from his base at the Four Seasons Hotel in a blacked-out minibus. He was accompanied by a Garda escort as he arrived at Croke Park at 4pm.

Even though proceedings weren’t due to start until 6pm, fans from all over Ireland and abroad began queuing outside from lunchtime.

ROBBIE PUT ON A GREAT SHOW

When Robbie eventually took to the stage in front of 80,000 fans – wearing a Crombie overcoat and accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display – he launched straight into Radio before quickly following up with crowd pleasers Rock DJ and Trippin.

An onlooker said: “Robbie is a consummate entertainer. He had the crowd eating right out of his hand from the very start. Frankly, he probably could have come on and recited the phone book and they would have lapped it all up. But in fairness to him, he put on a great show.”

Last night’s show was the first concert in Robbie’s new world tour. He is due to visit 12 other European countries as well as Australia in the coming months.

Music industry insiders say that he sells more records per capita in Ireland than in any other market.

Meanwhile, more than 30,000 fans crowded into the RDS Arena to see hard rockers Guns ‘n’ Roses reprise their blistering backlist of ‘80s and ‘90s hits, including Paradise City, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Welcome To The Jungle and November Rain, among others.

Some of the more enthusiastic concertgoers even donned kilts in homage to singer Axl Rose’s occasional stage gear – and the band’s first Irish show in more than a decade.

Tonight, veteran Californian softrockers The Eagles are to play the first of two consecutive nights at Lansdowne Road.

With longtime members Glenn Frey and Don Henley both in the line-up, fans can expect a middle-of-the-road diet with catchy hits such as Take It Easy, Desperado and Hotel California all expected to feature in the setlist. Back at the RDS tomorrow, however, it will be a noisier affair with heavy metal stalwarts Metallica due to perform their uncompromising brand of music for a diehard audience of headbangers.

It is estimated that the weekend of concerts will inject up to €50million into the capital’s economy through fans spending money on accommodation, entertainment and other leisure pursuits.

A business source said last night: “Concerts like these are very good news for traders. Young people tend to be quite carefree in their spending habits on these occasions but, of course, they don’t necessarily have a large disposable income. But when there’s a group like The Eagles playing, then you get a middle-aged audience for whom cash is generally not a problem. That is where the restaurants and pubs and hotels and shops really make their money.”

Organisers were expecting heavy traffic in and out of the capital amid the concerts.

Bosses at Iarnrod Eireann added eight special trains on the Crok and Limerick routes both to and from Dublin.

Tickets for the extra services were only being made available in advance and were not to be sold at stations on the day of departure. Regular trains from Galway, Mayo and Kerry are expected to be full to capacity. Two extra late-night services were also put on last night on the Northern and Maynooth routes for fans travelling home from the Williams show. Before the show, gardai set up a traffic restriction cordon around Croke Park from 10.30am.

Only people holding valid concert tickets were allowed trough the cordon, while gardai seized alcohol from fans who tried to smuggle supplies through.

After the show, an outer traffic cordon was put in place from 10.45pm to disperse vehicles travelling in different directions.

I was at his concert in Croke Park in June & absolutely loved it. Robbie was brilliant it was my first time seeing him live & I would love to see him again . I personally dont care whether I have to pay or not, its no big deal what happened that night & I felt sorry for him that he got stuck up in the air for some time, he must have had some fright realising that there were 90,000 people waiting for him on the ground & he was going nowhere fast, but these things happen.
I also met some lovely girls from the Uk who were staying in the same Hotel as me & they absolutely adored him & loved the show. So Robbie - you are wellcome back to Dublin anytime.

Rubbish Robbie in encore vow

Let Me Entertain You For Free: Superstar Pledges To Give Another Concert In Dublin

Herald Weekend
June 10, 2006
By Fionnuala O’Learly

Robbie Williams was disappointed with the opening show of his European tour at Croke Park that he has vowed to play a free date at Dublin.

The entertainer promised 90,000 fans who flocked to his Irish concert that he will return by the end of the year.

The usual magic associated with a Robbie gig just wasn’t in evidence at the stadium last night and no one agreed more than the main man himself.

Before the last song of the night, Robbie declared to audience: “I’ve not been very good tonight so I’m coming back and doing another show for free.”

Robbie (32) then ordered that camera focus in on his manager David Enthoven as proof that he was serious about his wish to replay his Irish date.

His manager signalled that he has understood Robbie’s request for the show to be organised and the crowd roared in approval.

The announcement of the free gig came after a stage blunder which left Williams missing for the penultimate song of the night, Let Me Entertain You.

Robbie was left stuck high above the stage, awaiting a piece of machinery to lower him down in gondola. However, the stunt didn’t go as planned and Robbie had make his own way down while his band nervously kept the music playing.

Robbie called it a “classic balls-up” before declaring, “I’m gonna come back and do you a free one now.”

The entire show has lacked the usual spark of a Williams gig as he appeared nervous and slightly unprepared.

An overdose of tracks from his latest album Intensive Care did little to spark the usual enthusiasm in the crowd.

Familiar favourites such Rock DJ, Strong and Angels proved the old Robbie who rocked Slane Castle, Landsdowne Road and the Phoenix Park, is still there. Meanwhile, a version of Take That’s song Back For Good was one of the highlights.

And while the fans had nothing to complain about, it’s a testament to Williams’ dedication to performing that he admitted the show lacked something.

And the Stoke-On-Trent born star was joined onstage by his childhood pal Jonathan Wilkes who sang two songs with him.

Of course Robbie couldn’t let the occasion pass without mention of his former boyband colleagues Take That. Robbie told the crowd that he had been asked to join the band on tour.

He said: “I couldn’t do their tour because I have a hugely successful world tour of my own to do.”

He then proceeded to dedicate a rendition of Back For Good to the ageing boyband who will return to play the RDS later this month.

You know what I think - It's no big deal if he does not come back to do a free concert. I was there in June & thought he was great.
I think he got a big fright when they had the technical problems & that he panicked & felt he had to say something. In fairness to him I cannot see another artist making the same offer. If he comes back - great - if not I hope to see him again sometime ( free or not ). Best live act out there & will continue to be for a long time to come - no one can touch him live.

Well I had a ball. Only that I was on the Cusack Stand directly behind the sound tower. I pogoed for 3 hours non stop!
I was disappointed when it fell through as I'd give anything to see him again.
I hadn't seen him in 7 years, not since Slane. I'll say honestly he's gotten more mature as a performer. The show was a sight and a spectacle, but unlike some other acts the fireworks were a bonus, not a distraction. I loved the choir on Make me Pure and A Place to Crash had me rocking out. Since I was so far back I didn't realise the problem until he said it.
The only hint that there was a deeper unease was when he sang Angels almost all the way through. I've never seen him do that except on TV.

JUST AN UPDATE ON THE INNER SANCTUM TICKETS FOR DUBLIN - after complaining to trading standards about the rubbish tickets I received after paying top whack ..i was sort of pleased to hear yesterday that I the company responsible would give me half my money back! I bought 4 tickets at top price so I suppose its some kind of compensation. They also offered me 4 t shirts which I pointed out where given away free when I purchased the subscription!! I suggested they could think of something more original! Unfortunately they didnt offer any compensation on the accomodation/flghts/but at least they accepted responsibility. I could have taken it to Court to get all my money back but I would have been a long drawn out affair - perhaps if Rob had been there to defend his Company I might have considered!!!!!!!! the longer the better!

I was really pleased with my tickets. I got seated ones and they were fantastic. Considering some people got lamped with really far back ones and the other end of the stage.

I had seated tickets at the top left of the stage - but the stadium is so bloody huge it was still very hard to see him. I did think that he gave a fantastic performance though as in a stadium that big it's not easy to project yourself to the audience & by God did he do it very well indeed. I loved the show & was so happy that I got the opportunity to see him in a live performance. I would gladly go again if her ever returns. Brialliant performer.

I done know if they would be of any use - I still have mine , but I can remember seeing thousands of them thrown away on the ground of the stadium ---- so I think its a non starter. I will be totally surprised if he comes back to do a free concert - I am not too bothered anyway as I thought he was great that night ... I never thought that I would ever get to see him live & I did so Im a Happy Bunny...................

I still have my tickets but I do not think it will matter for the free gig...what about the loads of people that threw away their tickets as I saw them all over the ground in Croke Park......I am guessing he may do an open air gig in the Phoenix Park & that would solve the problem & everyone could go as that place is massive....however I think we may have quite a wait before it happens..:search: ..not sure if Robbie is in concert mode these days but it will happen eventually because he has said so ...:yay:

Tickets will have no bearing on it as how would you call that fair....lots of people dumped their tickets but attended the concert..I would still think the PP option would be really fair & then enyone who wanted to could attend...I hope it does come off ...wait & see I guess...
