Eckoh, a European provider of outsourced communications solutions, processed £800,000 worth of donations to UNICEF from almost 40,000 individual callers during Soccer Aid, the fund raising brainchild of UNICEF UK Ambassador, Robbie Williams, broadcast on ITV 1 & ITV2 from 22 to 27 May.

Eckoh provided an automated telephone donation line using IVR, speech recognition and a sophisticated automated payment system to allow callers to have their credit card donations processed at high speed during the call. When calls to UNICEF?s contact centres exceeded capacity, calls were diverted to the automated system, optimising the number of people who were able to donate. Sixty-two percent of all telephone donations were received via the automated system. This contributed to Soccer Aid?s unprecedented success ? the initiative raised over £2 million in total for UNICEF ? double the original estimate of £1 million.

?Automation has powerful potential for charity appeal donation lines where call peaks, because they are short and dramatic, are difficult to handle using traditional contact centre agents alone,? says Eckoh?s Client Development Manager, Tracey Miller. ?We were able to supplement UNICEF?s live agent contact centre, allowing lines to remain open 24 hours a day for the whole week with all calls handled without delay or interruption.?

Further, because credit card donations to Soccer Aid were processed and authorised during the call, the lengthy transcription of credit card details was avoided and the funds made available to the charity directly.

The £2 million raised by Soccer Aid will fund UNICEF?s work with its partners to support children affected by HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Malnutrition, lack of education, lack of clean water and abandonment. Soccer Aid was broadcast live on ITV1 and ITV2 from 22 ? 27 May, with donation lines remaining open until Sunday 4 June. World Cup football legends and major celebrities competed for a place in one of two teams, finally battling it out on the pitch for the Soccer Aid Final ? broadcast live from Old Trafford on 27 May.
