Croke Park 9/6/06 Concert Report

Well I have to say that I throughly enjoyed the concert. We managed to get VIP tickets so before the concert, we were pretty chilled out watching the Beautiful South from there. They were really good, but were on when we arrived which was at 6:30 so there weren't that many people there at the beginning. They played all their old hits, Old Red Eyes went down the best! But really were probably on too early, but they have strict laws about what time the gigs have to finish in Croke Park.
After Beautiful South ended we went to our seats. We were pretty much in line with the round stage that comes out from the walk way. Probably the best seating view anyway! The inner sanctum tickets paid off that way, actually the VIP ones were worse (we got them this week) so we stuck with ones I had paid for! Everyone around us was from UK, Holland, Spain and seemed to be all inner sanctum people.
My memory of the line up isn't great, but the concert started with lights on the back of the stage coming on to the tune of Close Encounters. Then Robbie comes up to through the floor in the centre stage. I think it took a few seconds for everyone to realise that he had. Luckily for us he spent most of his time at that stage. (For anyone going to standing concerts, I'd say that around their will be the best view of him). Then he sang Radio, he was wearing a suit like he did in Germany, but orange scarf instead of pink. Then he sang Trippin, which got a really good reception. I was wondering if the audience would like the newer stuff as well as the old classics.
He did a bit of chatting then about being back in Dublin after Pheonix Park. He asked did anyone go to Pheonix Park, and said he thought it was really funny cause there were 100,000 people there and then 35,000 round a corner saying. "Oh is he on now, is that Robbie" cause they couldn't see a thing. He did about another two, I think it was Monsoon and Sin Sin Sin, which also got a really good response. He then went off to get changed and a "Swing for one night only" came up on the screens. So I rang Yvonne (Mousepractice)!! They sang Me and My Shadow and did a little dancing
Vicky D 06-10-2006, 06:26 PM Thanks Serc for your review! Sounds like you had a great night and lucky you for getting the VIP Passes! Don't worry about trying to remember everything that Rob sang and in what order. Your job was to enjoy a great night of Rob and not be remembering how it all happened. I guess Rob would have been nervous for the first night of his tour so hopefully he will relax a bit now and enjoy it more and not be so harsh on himself and his performance. We all love him however it comes out!
I am now counting the days to this time next week when I see him in Paris. Reading about last night is getting me really excited, so thank you x
shell 06-10-2006, 06:28 PM Excellent report serc, glad you had a great spot.
Great to hear he added abit of swing. I hope Jonathan joins him at Milton Keynes :)
Sorry I hit enter by mistake!! :o As I was saying... They said that they had only rehearsed this bit about five minutes before the show. Rob said Jonny wasn't any good at Dayo's (I had no clue what he was on about) so it would be funny. They divided the arena into two and got us to compete singing. They then said they wanted Dublin to be a kareokee venue for the night and put the words up of Strong and the two of them sang that.
Then Robbie got a chair and spoke about Take That. He said he'd read all the stuff saying, "Robbie's def going to be here tonight" but he would be doing a gig in f****** Prague. So he said he is not joining them on tour, he has a rather successful one of his own to do. He said he had met up with the boys and it was really nice to see them and sang Back for Good. Then he aptly did No Regrets!!!!
Now this is when the two women beside me and my boyfriend (who were rather drunk) started asking me loads of drunken questions and trying to get my quite shy boyfriend to dance. So this is where the line up gets hazzy. He did Advertising Space, Place to Crash, Come Undone, Make me Pure, and Oh Yeah. (Not sure what order though).
Then he went off. They came back on after about 5 mins and Robbie was really high up at the top of the stage. He was wearing a white Adidas tracksuit and was sitting down. He sang the first verse of Let Me Entertain You. I thought it was nice that he went so high up cause Croke Park is so high the people at the top could see him then. i could see that he was looking around him. Then he go to the chorus. I thought he was frightened of the height, and was surprised he hadn't check this out before hand! Then the screens went on to the band who were giggling. The second verse was sang by them and Robbie walked down the side of the railings. Then he was sining a bit from backstage. He eventually came on stage and sang the last chorus. He said "Can I let you into a little secret, that was a complete f*** up, when I was up there I was meant to come down in a gondala and appear on stage. But the thing you don't want to hear when at that height when you are singing to 90,000 people from the person behind you is "its f****", and you also don't want to be wearing a white tracksuit. I was sh***ing myself." Then sort of out of the blue he went on that he felt really disappointed that the lift thing hadn't worked and the that he always enjoys the Dublin gigs and he feels he didn't do us justice so that he was going to come back and do a gig for free. He made the camera go on David Eindhoven and said he had to promise they would be back and do a free one. Then he sang Angels, he looked very emotional and shed a few tears. Afterwards he said he would see us before the end of the year.
I was actually really surprised when he said that he didn't think he did a good job. He did look very nervous though. But I enjoyed it. From people who aren't major Robbie fans they said that they did enjoy the concert, but the screens show video clips sometimes instead of the live gig, for such a big venue (as is the rest of the tour) they felt they couldn't see as much. The only other criticism I heard was from friends of mine who wouldn't know that much about Robbie that they didn't know who Jonathan was.
All that said, the concert made me wish I had one tonight too! Hopefully I'll get to see him again, maybe in Dublin, if he's able to come back.

I was also at the gig in Croke Park & really, really enjoyed it....Croke Park is a massive stadium & can be a souless / barren place because it is such a grey / gloomy building so wide open. Rob did a fantastic show I thought & I was up in the stands not too far from the satge & all the people in my area of the stand were on their feet all through the concert & joined in with Rob on all the songs., I was really surprised that so many people knew the words of the songs from IC which indicated that they must have played the album many times.
There were so many people there & the place was so big that I could only see figures at the other side of the stadium & not faces. It was Rob's first night of his WT & he must have been very nervous... it's not easy getting up before 90,000 people & entertain them & keep them interested for two hours. Rob is brilliant at doing this & not many other artists can do that. He definately got a fright when he got stuck at the top as it was very high up off the ground & he just did not need that to happen. I dont expect him to do a free show as I dont think he owes us anything . I do hope he does return again but I would prefer to see him in a venue like the Point theatre for a more intimate performance....but I can only dream.. Rob is so famous now that he will more than likely continue to do large venues which is a pity but I suppose that way most of his fans get a chance to see him.
May he be around to entertain us for a long time to come & may he first & foremost be happy in himself.....
